The University of Tennessee believes the professional development and training of its employees are central to the university’s mission, vision, and values.

Professional development and training should be planned individually during the employee’s annual performance review, and throughout the year based on ongoing coaching and evaluation of performance, and assessment of organizational needs. Employees are strongly encouraged to seek professional development aligned with their current job and career aspirations at UT. Supervisors are strongly encouraged to support employees' participation in a minimum of 32 hours of training and development activities per year. (HR0128 – Employee Professional Development and Training Policy)

To facilitate this expectation, MTAS has an electronic system for creating professional development events and recording attendance for HR128 credit. The system may be accessed from the staff portal or at https://staff.mtas.tennessee.edu/MTASPersonnel/MTASPersonnel.htm.

MTAS Process:
Employees locate professional development opportunities that support their current position and career aspirations at UT.

Before each event, employees complete a professional development form describing the training.

  • Events within the state of Tennessee are considered approved upon entry.
  • Events outside of Tennessee must be approved by the Executive Director prior to attendance to ensure expenses will be reimbursed.

After attendance, the employee marks the professional development event as attended. HR128 credit is automatically entered into IRIS for all attended events.

Within IPS, all full-time employees are expected to complete at least 32 hours of Professiona Development each calendar year.
