Subject: Internal Search for Vice President for the Institute for Public Service

The internal search process for selecting a permanent vice president for the University of Tennessee's Institute for Public Service is underway.

This position is appointed by the University of Tennessee president, reporting to the executive vice president, and has leadership and budgetary responsibility for the following IPS entities:

* Center for Industrial Services
* County Technical Assistance Service
* Municipal Technical Advisory Service
* Law Enforcement Innovation Center
* Naifeh Center for Effective Leadership

The primary goals of this key leadership position are to promote good government, strengthen economic development and improve the quality of life in Tennessee.

The vice president works with IPS executive directors, other members of the University leadership team, and representative customer groups to develop plans for IPS in four strategic areas: (1) leadership and executive development, (2) technology utilization, (3) environmental quality, and (4) economic and community competitiveness while maintaining high quality in traditional consulting and training services.

Areas of responsibility include developing strategies to extend UT expertise to Tennessee cities, counties, industries and communities; leading IPS in implementation of those activities; maintaining strong relations with state and local government officials and industry executives; and seeking ways to involve academic units more fully in the public service mission. The vice president will be responsible for overseeing the IPS mission by meeting the needs of its clientele and extending UT's expertise across the state.

Applicants and nominees are expected to have:

* Master's degree required; advanced degree preferred
* 10 years' experience working with state and local government officials and/or leading complex organizations and/or working in a higher education environment with a public service mission preferred
* An understanding of all entities within the statewide UT System and their relations and interface to the University
* An understanding of the impact of legislation and public policy upon the University
* Demonstrated experience consulting and advising senior-level executives
