Position Classification - I'm cancelling the time Thursday in Jackson and Friday in Nashville to review the position classification information with everyone. I've met with two people in the Knoxville office to test my material and it takes all of three minutes. SO, we will mail everything to you and you should call me after you get the envelope. We'll keep our appointments in Knoxville, just to avoid the rush.

Annual Report in Pictures - As part of our annual MTAS retreat in October, we are going to do a pictorial report on MTAS for the last year. Steve, Brett, Margaret, Sally, and I will be wandering around taking pictures to help with that. We're looking for serious pictures and some not so serious.

Nashville Office Mechanics - Turns out almost everyone in the Nashville office is a cube furniture and wall mechanic. Or, at least it has seemed that way for the last two weeks. They have rearranged most of the cubes and furniture to make better use of the space available. Special thanks goes to Gary for the plan and overall coordination. I'm told Margaret, in addition to cubical moving, made cookies to keep everyone motivated and that everyone else pitched in as needed. The results look excellent.

Gatlinburg - Ray Crouch reports that, in part from taking his advice, the Gatlinburg Fire Department has been awarded an ISO rating of 3 down from a 5. It's a big step for them.

Here are the totals for the state. (The library has a reference publication with the details.)
Class 1 - None
Class 2 - 1 (Memphis)
Class 3 - 32 (All the Benchmarking cities are at 3, except Brentwood at 4)
Class 4 - 52
Class 5 - 90
Class 6 - 115
Class 7 - 180 (Most average volunteer departments with an OK water supply fall under class 6 or 7)
Class 8 - 104
Class 9 - 418 (This is virtually no fire protection)
Class 10 - 3

Additions to the web site - Frances has added the following resources to the MTAS website:
  • Drug Fund class materials, handouts - all in PDF format
  • Best Practices information from Mike Tallent’s session at TML
  • Posted position for the Franklin School District
  • Converted all course City University course description pages from PDF to HTML
  • MTAS Model ordinances for storm water management and storm water utility as well as the latest Phase II Storm Water Permit Application.

Drug Fund Training - Rex and Ralph set a new record for one of our training series. They offered nine sessions with a total attendance of 385. Rex broke down the attendance as follows:
In addition to the high registration numbers for the Drug Fund class, 144 cities were represented in the class. There are roughly 270 municipal police departments in the state, and about 20-25 of those are "one man" or part-time departments. Those departments often turn all drug arrests (and subsequent revenue) over to the sheriff or judicial district drug task force. Even including those very small departments, we touched over half of the cities with police departments.
    Also, the registration included:
    6 attendees from Memphis
    4 attendees from Nashville
    7 attendees from Knoxville
    16 attendees from Chattanooga
4 attendees from the Office of Municipal Audit at the Comptroller's Office
