Subject: TML Special Notice - July 12, 2002

SPECIAL NOTICE TO MUNICIPAL OFFICIALS

In a special called board meeting on July 9, 2002, the Tennessee Municipal
League Board of Directors voted to offer Margaret Mahery, mayor of Athens,
the position of TML executive director. In extending an offer to Mahery, the
Board of Directors concurred with the executive committee's recommendation.

The position was left vacant in June, when Rae Young Bond resigned to return
to her home in Chattanooga. Bond had served as executive director for the
past 18 months. Mahery's appointment will make her the fifth person to hold
that position in League's half-century-long history.

Mahery has served as Athens mayor since 1998 and has served on the council
since 1989. During her tenure as mayor, she has overseen such initiatives
as:

* obtaining funding for stormwater drainage improvements;
* overseeing the groundbreaking for the Southeast Tennessee Trade and
Conference Center, and
* initiating and completing a countywide master recreation plan.

Mahery is currently the director of the Tennessee Technology Center at
Athens, where she taught for 13 years before becoming its director in 1989.
She is a member of the TML Board and past board president. She serves on the
board of the TML Risk Management Pool and is a past member of the National
League of Cities Board of Directors.

Margaret Mahery has been an active member of TML and was a strong leader
during her presidency.  Please join the TML Board in extending a warm
welcome to Margaret in her new role with the Tennessee Municipal League.

It is expected that Margaret will begin her duties as League director
sometime in September.
