STAFF UPDATE
February 28, 1994

System to Institute Visit Since he was appointed president, Dr. Joe Johnson has conducted a series of "system to campus" visits. He, the vice presidents, and some chancellors, make about two visits per year to each campus and each institute. Sometimes when they come to IPS each agency makes a presentation, sometimes we make joint presentations, and sometimes one agency has most of the air time. In the last couple of years, I've covered our role in environmental issues, given a short general MTAS summary and watched while CIS held the floor for a couple of hours.

The next system to institute visit will be March 23. It's our turn to make the major presentation. I've asked Joe and Carol to help me present the comprehensive management review process to Dr. Johnson and his staff. We are going to concentrate on recent work in Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Clinton. And we're going to ask city officials from each city to help with the presentation. So far, Mayor Victor Ashe and Mayor Gene Roberts have accepted our invitations to help.

* Exempt Salary Administration Review We're enclosing a memo from Vice President Eli Fly. The Personnel Department is going to look at our exempt positions to see if we comply with the FLSA.

* Herbert Bingham Consultancy Sometime within the next year, The University will launch a big fund raising campaign. IPS agencies will participate in this effort. But, it's hard to raise any money if you don't have a project. We've developed the Herbert Bingham Consultancy for a fund raising goal. We will look for donations to endow the program. We've enclosed a preliminary description of the program. If you have any ideas for additional types of consultants as part of the program, please let me know.

TRAVEL UPDATE The Treasurer's Office will accept trip meter miles as well as odometer miles on travel reimbursement reports. Actually they have been doing this for some time. We've enclosed sample sheets of how the mileage log should look and how the Travel Reimbursement report will look. Each trip should start with 0 and end with the total miles. If you have any questions about how to record the mileage, please call Ann or Sarah. You may continue using odometer readings if you would prefer.

MTAS Advisory Committees By the time you read this, we will have started the next round of meetings for our three advisory committees. We'll meet in Nashville, Jackson, and Knoxville on March 1, 2, and 3. The agenda includes the UT Bicentennial video along with the finance consultants (JimL, Dick, and Ken) reporting on our financial consulting and any financial hot topics.
